Out of America is a powerful book that got me up to date about Sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to reading it, three things I knew about Sub-Saharan Africa are: there is no such thing as a country except for South Africa, it's full of tribes, and war, destruction, and disease are the norms. The author proved me correct on all three counts/5. Elsewhere, emergency committees ran "bundle days" to collect clothing for the destitute unemployed. Across urban America, cities combined public action and private effort to help the down and out. By then, they were simply following tradition. Enter the Federal Government — Hesitantly.
